Shiblon, the steady and faithful one, the middle child, the
good example; every family hopefully has a Shiblon or two. Nevertheless, Shiblon received strict
warnings from his father, Alma: “See
that ye are not lifted up unto pride; yea, see that ye do not boast in your own
wisdom, nor of your much strength. Use
boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridal all your passions, that ye may be filled with love (not
lust); see that ye refrain from idleness.
Smart, handsome, physically imposing, and passionate, Shiblon could have
easily become prideful. Alma saw in his
son the need for temperance, humility, and restraint. He was pleased with the good example he had
set for his younger brother, Corianton, and admonished him to continue to keep
the commandments and endure to the end.
