The new covenant was very different from the prescriptive,
rule driven, Old Testament. Jesus
clearly establishes a higher law, while specifically doing away with bad
traditions that had grown up in the church.
For example, he wanted the people to be generous with their offerings
but he wanted them to make the donations in private instead of making a big
show. The same was true for prayer,
fasting, and washing. He taught them to
turn their hearts away from the treasures of the world and instead lay up
treasures in heaven. He warned them to
serve God and not Satan. To the Twelve,
he said to go out and preach without worry.
Take no thought for what you will eat or drink or what you will
wear. I will take care of you. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his
righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for
the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.”
